Travel Pictures - GUATEMALA - 1994

I traveled along Guatemala's mountain chain stopping first in the Mam-speaking, Mayan village of Todos Santos. While wandering across the central highlands, I slowed down at the lovely Lake Atitlan - a popular gringo hangout. From Lake Atitlan I headed toward Honduras and added another stop in the former capital city
of Antigua before a final break in Guatemala's current (and polluted) capital of Guatemala City.

Most of the men in this mountain hideaway wear the exact same outfit - a stylish and dashing uniform of conformity.
I never visited a community with a stronger sense of group identity -

This photo accurately captures the scene that led to one of the most horrific incidents to ever arise from nothing more than a cultural misunderstanding. A Japanese tourist, visiting the town with 35 others for the colorful and bustling Saturday market, sympathetically
reached out toward a crying infant strapped to the back of a young Indian woman. The Mam mother, seeing the stranger reaching
toward her child, cried out "They want to steal my child!" The misunderstanding led to an impassioned mob that brutally
attacked and killed a Japanese tourist and the group's Guatemalan guide -

These young Indian "business" girls spend their day selling products to tourists and locals in the town square. Although
they are missing out on many aspects of a balanced education, their real-world experiences have enabled them to
become proficient in several languages as well as gain a personal understanding of the free market! -
