Ecuador is a picturesque country where visitors commingle with ancient cultures unchanged over the last millennia. The Andes Mountains run the length of the country in a chain of massive, snow-capped volcanoes that tower to over 20,000 feet. I visited the country during a border conflict with Peru that threatened to escalate into a full-blown war. Although the conflict never escalated to that level, I did have to change my travel plans on my way to the southern tip of the continent. |

Chimborazo is Ecuador's highest

hotel room's balcony - Banos, Ecuador |

I never had a more enjoyable
visit to an animal park than my day at the Banos Zoo. Although the tourist brochure referred to the zoo as the "animal prison," the tapirs roamed freely among the visitors - Banos, Ecuador |

sociable or is he tasting the tourists? - Banos, Ecuador |

Ecuador's commercial capital from the rooftops - Guayaquil, Ecuador |

I reckoned (as well as the onlookers) that these frightening looking creatures
were harmless - at least while they were feeding on this assortment of greens - City Square; Guayaquil, Ecuador |

Salinas is Ecuador's most popular resort on the Pacific Ocean - Guayaquil, Ecuador |
|
These Chilean tourists had just arrived from Chile (by bus) by crossing the
Peruvian border - a supposedly "closed" border for which I had just purchased a $400 dollar ticket to fly over! - Guayaquil, Ecuador |
